The Fort Lauderdale Major packed an exclusive punch on Friday when former heavyweight champion of the world boxer David ‘The Hayemaker’ Haye commentated on Kerri Walsh Jennings’ game on Center Court live on The SPORTbible Facebook page.

The 36-year-old Londoner joined Canadian Martin Reader in the commentary box before trying his hand at beach volleyball with Martin, Alex Ranghieri and the Beach Majors Dancers!

Haye, who is in Florida preparing for a big fight against fellow Briton Tony Bellew on March 4, couldn’t get enough of his first ever beach volleyball experience.

“Once I heard you guys were here I wanted to see what all the excitement was about,” Haye told us. “After the 2012 Olympics in London I wanted to come and see it for myself…and I wasn’t disappointed.

“It was interesting figuring out the rules and learning the intricacies of the technique behind the sport. It was great.

“After messing around on the sand for five minutes I can already feel my calves and my quads so I appreciate that you have to be an amazing athlete to perform at this level in this sport.

“It’s one thing boxing for 10 rounds on a hard surface but when you add sand into the mix it’s a whole new game. Watching the game, you could see the players’ determination and condition. They were jumping just as high at the end as they were at the beginning and that’s a huge testament to their fitness.”

So will David incorporate beach volleyball into his regime ahead of the bout with Bellew?

“I’m definitely going to be using sand a lot more,” he laughed. “Even if that’s just shadow boxing on the sand. I felt it in my knees and ankles and I think it will definitely help give me that little extra edge that everyone is searching for.”
