Family affair at #FTLMajor

Brother, sisters and cousins in action at the Fort Lauderdale Major

It’s turning out to be a bit of a family affair here at the Fort Lauderdale Major – but today has been an up and down day for the families competing in Florida.

Taylor and Trevor Crabb, the American brothers from Hawaii who split as a team in the off-season, enjoyed a pretty satisfying day at the beach.

Taylor won both of his matches with Jake Gibb to give the pair a great chance of reaching the men’s second elimination round. Trevor, playing with Sean Rosenthal, won one and lost one in Pool B. However, their victory came against number two seeds from Latvia Samoilovs/Smedins. Very impressive, boys.

It wasn’t such a good day for Chilean cousins and 2016 Olympians Marco and Esteban Grimalt, though. They were handed a tough first day in Pool G and went down to defeats to Canada’s Saxton/Schalk and Olympic silver medalists Lupo/Nicolai.

Brothers weren’t doing it for themselves in Pool C. German siblings Bennet and David Poniewaz also lost both of their pool play games, including a straight sets defeat to Olympic champions Alison/Bruno – who recovered from their early defeat to Patterson/Brunner to get them back on track.

Keeping on the sibling theme, Olympic champ Kira Walkenhorst secured two victories with Julia Groβner which booked their place in the elimination round but her brother Alex has it all to do on Thursday after he and Kay Matysik lost both of their matches.

Don’t forget there’s a husband and wife also competing in Fort Lauderdale. Canada’s Chaim Schalk and wife Lane Carico had a mixed day. Chaim and teammate Ben Saxton, whose sister lost in the qualification yesterday, won both matches but Lane, together with Irene Pollock, lost their one match today.
