Beach Volleyball legend Phil Dalhausser Spikes the Sun

Here at the Swatch Major Series we like to do things differently - push the boundaries; do daring things that wouldn’t occur to other bodies in beach volleyball.

With the countdown to another epic start to the summer season ticking down towards the Fort Lauderdale Major on February 7-12, we’re proud to be able to present a true sight to behold: Two heroes of the beach spiking the sun.

These stunning images of USA Olympic beach volleyball legend Phil Dalhausser and fellow Olympic star Lauren Fendrick are the brilliant creation of sports photographer Dustin Snipes.

Spike the Sun was inspired by the iconic Dunk the Sun shoot with NBA star Anthony Davis from 2015, which was also shot by Dustin.

Phil and Lauren took time out from their busy #FTLMajor preparations to embrace an energy of a different kind. On this very special occasion there was no ball and no opponent. Just the sun, the sand and the artistic direction of Dustin.

As the sun began to set on Fort Lauderdale beach, the spiking, serving and snapping began. #spikethesun was born and, we’re sure you’ll agree, these stunning shots speak for themselves.

Phil, who together with partner Nick Lucena won a silver medal the last time international beach volleyball rocked up in Fort Lauderdale, was honored to be part of such an iconic photoshoot.

“Spiking and serving the sun was challenging and I had to be in total sync with the photographer,” said the 2008 Olympic champ. “It’s like the two-man game we play on the beach where teamwork and communication is key.

“It’s a great idea and I can’t remember how many times it took me to perfect the shot – all I know was that there was a lot of jumping involved.

“Adjusting the jump according to the sun’s position was the most difficult part but the end result is all that matters – and the photos look pretty darn cool.”
